Understanding how to create an effective wilderness shelter is a must for anyone. Having these skills can mean the difference between life and death.

Each season presents its own challenges. This course is essential to effectively create a shelter that will stand up to the seasonal obstacles. From keeping us protected from the elements to providing a safe place to rest, wilderness shelters serve a key role in the wilderness. Shelters provide for the body's needs and also create a sense of security and home in the wilderness.

What is covered in the course? 

Each season presents its own challenges. This course is essential to effectively create a shelter that will stand up to the seasonal obstacles. From keeping us protected from the elements to providing a safe place to rest, wilderness shelters serve a key role in the wilderness. Shelters provide for the body's needs and also create a sense of security and home in the wilderness.

In this course students will learn modern and primitive shelter building techniques for surviving in the worst conditions. We will use both man-made and natural resources to construct shelters. Our instructors will cover cold weather as well as warm weather shelters. Students will learn everything they need to know about staying dry and warm in the wilderness, while building several types of shelters. Our instructors have dedicated hours of dirt time perfecting the skills they’ll pass on to the fortunate participants in this course!


Eligibility Requirements: Students must be at least 12 years old. All students younger than 18 must be accompanied by a paid parent or legal guardian.

  • The five second shelter and the emergency tarp shelter

  • The difference between a survival shelter and a long term shelter

  • Importance of cover, both natural and man-made 

  • Essential knots and lashings needed to secure shelter implements

  • Importance of insulation, both natural and man-made

  • Using fire with shelter

  • Types of structures - natural and man-made

  • The four methods of heat transfer

  • Proper sheltering locations and dangers

  • Creating a microclimate

  • Protecting core body temperature

  • Importance of timing- when to shelter

  • Creating comfort to extend rest

  • Using clothing as shelter

  • And so much more!
