ALL THINGS WATER

Water purification and filtration is one of the most important skills we teach at The Woodsrunner School. Since water makes up more than two thirds, or around 60% of the average person’s body weight, it is a necessity. Even the slightest amount of water deprivation can be extremely harmful. Not all water sources are potable, or safe to drink. Rivers, lakes, ponds, and creeks often contain parasites, bacteria and other deadly pathogens.  Chemical contaminants also cause severe problems and explorers and campers are finding them in water sources worldwide.

The World Health Organization estimates that globally over 2 million people a year die from waterborne illnesses.  It is recommended that campers and outdoors-men should consider all water found in the wilderness contaminated and should purify and filter it with an adequate treatment method before consuming. This caution is such a change from our daily lives, since for most individuals in developed countries, getting a cup of safe and clean drinking water is as easy as turning on the faucet.

What happens when there’s a situation in which that luxury is no longer present?

It is essential to have the knowledge and skills about how to properly filter and purify drinking water in a variety of different environments and situations because it can literally save your life.

What should I expect?

In this one day course, we will cover the many types of bacteria, parasites, viruses, and chemicals that, when ingested, lead to illness after drinking untreated water. We also explore how they get into water sources both in the wilderness and in populated areas. Our instructors will explain and show the various methods to make water safe to drink using different modern filtration and purification tools as well as using improvised techniques.
